Growing up, Kurogane learned self-defense and a bit of swordsmanship from her father in order to protect herself from the dangers that lurk in the snow. Her mother also taught her a few spells to kept warm in case she ever got lost in a blizzard. She was very close to her parents, helping them with things around the house like helping with dinner or cutting wood for the fire while her father was working.

In her early teen years, her father disappeared, and later found dead, while a group of travelers were passing through. At the same time, her mother became ill. After her father's death, Kurogane became determined to protect her mother and do what she could to protect her. This worked for a few years before the illness claimed her mother's life.

Left alone, Kurogane wanted revenge on the travelers, who are the only ones she could blame for her parents' deaths. Her mother's illness and her father's death coinciding too well for her to believe that the illness was as sudden as it should have been. She changed her goal to protecting the village from the foreigners that pass through.
